The Path Ahead Early development cannot begin and end at the doors of ECD centres. It’s shaped by the people, places, and opportunities that surround them. The next phase is therefore about strengthening the people and systems around children in the ECD programme. This entails continuing to build strong networks of practitioners, mentors, and caregivers; encouraging local youth to see ECD as a viable career pathway; and developing the leadership, governance, and monitoring systems needed to sustain quality as the programme grows. At the heart of this ambition is an open-source ECD good-practice model that can be shared across the continent, allowing lessons learned in one community to inform and strengthen others. “We’re in talks with local communities and parents about how we can introduce the programme meaningfully in Rwanda,” says Angela Shillan, Singita’s Conservation Manager. More than a million years ago, people lived in this landscape. They moved through it, depended on it, adapted to it, and left traces of their lives behind. Generations came and went, cultures changed, and the relationship between people and the natural world continued to evolve. Today, we are simply another chapter in that long story, and the responsibility sits with us to adequately prepare those who will fill its future pages.
