Zoomed in, the veins of a tiny leaf carry what’s needed to all parts of the plant, in the same way as the veins of an insect’s wing, or the branches of a tree. On a grander scale, complex river systems carry water to landscapes in need of satiation. The forks of lightning crack across the sky, striking the ground at random, balancing the Earth’s electrical circuit and converting atmospheric nitrogen into compounds that feed plants. Patterns that echo across the world at different scales are a lesson in stepping back to see the bigger picture.
