something quieter settles

in your chest

Musanze On the way back, Chriss asked if there was time to spare. He took me to the Studio of African Wildlife Art in Musanze — a gallery whose conservation mission is expressed through local wildlife and nature-inspired art — and then into town, where we walked the food and produce markets, and he showed me around. I met some of his friends at the youth centre.

Back at Kwitonda, a fresh green juice was waiting in my room, and a card with a watercolour portrait of Muturengere with facts about his family — a memento to take home. The fire was lit, and a warm drawn bath is ready, if you want one. Still feeling the mountain in your legs, something quieter settles in your chest.

Right Kwitonda is lined with spaces to be still, and to reflect on the volcanoes just beyond.
