We came to see you, but you weren’t there.
You had grass in your teeth; a table set but never dined at. Were you afraid when you heard us coming? Our footsteps the same as those who did this to you. Did you worry we would do it again?
We came as friends, but just too late. Putting the two halves of your scattered skull together only to notice the space where your horn had been. No birds or crickets were singing then,
but something fierce stirred within us.
We came to tell you there are tears still shed for you.
Hats removed and prayers still said for you.
Silences shared where resolve strengthens. We sat with our grief until it gave way to something brighter.
Now what was taken from you will help others live.
We came searching and found a deeper need.
You’ll return to these hills; the tall grass will hold you.
And with every telling of your story, new life will flower.
Brushing dust off your bones so sunlight can reach you. We swore it then when we came as friends.
