Some heavy, large seeds simply fall from the parent plant and roll a short distance away. For others, a slightly longer journey prepares them to return to the ground. They’re either carried on an animal’s fur, a bird’s feathers, or digested (zoochory). Mammals, birds and primates, tempted by their sweetness, eat fruits and disperse seeds further away. The digestion process also aids easier germination — whether discarded seeds are covered in nutrient-rich dung or softened by digestion. A mutually beneficial process that feeds both animal and soil.

Fire, far from being only a destructive force, is often crucial for many plants. Some species have adapted specialised strategies that depend on it for reproduction. From hard cones or pods that can only be opened by heat (serotiny and pyriscence), releasing seeds into nutrient-rich ash or exposing them to rain; to smoke-stimulated germination, whose chemicals trigger dormant seeds to burst to life in rapid germination after a fire. Or myrmecochory, where ants carry seeds down underground

for storage, keeping them safe even as vegetation burns, only to sprout in the nutrient-rich post-fire earth, almost like a phoenix.
